Valerius intercepts Randy, revealing his own connection to the school and his desire for the sword's power. A fierce battle ensues, testing Randy's resolve.
The stone of the Labyrinth of Trials felt slick beneath my boots, each step echoing with a hollow finality that did little to soothe the knot of unease coiling in my stomach. The air itself was thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else… something metallic and sharp, like old blood and forgotten rage. I’d navigated the twisting passages, solved riddles that would have stumped a seasoned scholar, and bested magical constructs designed to break even the most potent sorcerers. Yet, the true trial, I suspected, lay not in the labyrinth’s physical confines, but in the shadows that lurked within its heart.
My hand instinctively tightened around the hilt of my sword, the familiar worn leather a small comfort against the growing dread. Zoe was supposed to meet me at the exit, her presence a beacon of light in this oppressive darkness. But the labyrinth was a cruel mistress, designed to isolate, to prey on a warrior’s deepest fears. And mine were legion. The taunts of my classmates, the pity in their eyes, the gnawing doubt that my grandmother’s dying words were nothing but a desperate fantasy.
A low chuckle, like stones grinding together, slithered through the silence. It wasn’t the playful mischief of Finn and Fae, nor the echoing laughter of the labyrinth’s guardians. This was a sound steeped in malice, a sound that promised pain. I spun around, my sword flashing into a defensive stance.
