The air in Elara’s chambers was thick with the scent of dried herbs and ancient parchment, a comforting aroma that always settled my nerves. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating shelves crammed with scrolls, bubbling vials, and artifacts I couldn’t even begin to identify. It was a sanctuary, a stark contrast to the boisterous, often hostile, halls of the magic school. I’d sought her out after my last sparring session with Katelyn, the sting of her taunts still echoing in my ears, amplified by the gnawing doubt that had become my constant companion. My grandmother’s words, the promise of the Sword of Rana, felt more like a cruel joke with each passing day.
Elara, her face a roadmap of a life lived long and fully, sat by a low table, her fingers, gnarled like ancient roots, meticulously tracing patterns on a faded tapestry. She looked up as I entered, her eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, holding a depth that always made me feel both seen and profoundly small.
“Randy,” she said, her voice a gentle rasp, like leaves skittering across stone. “You carry a heavy burden today.”
