My mother, Anya, had always moved with a quiet grace, a woman whose strength was in her stillness, a gentle river flowing through life’s often turbulent landscape. I saw it in the way she tended her small garden, coaxing life from stubborn soil, and in the soft murmur of her voice as she read stories to me, her touch a balm against the anxieties that sometimes clung to my small shoulders. But lately, a new light had begun to flicker in her eyes, a reflection of the storm I had been weathering, a storm that had, in turn, begun to brew a tempest within her.

It started subtly. She would watch me, her gaze lingering, a question etched between her brows. She saw the shadows that sometimes danced at the edges of my vision, the way my laughter, once bright and unrestrained, could now be fragile, easily broken. She noticed the worn Red Cross book I kept close, its pages filled not with easy answers, but with a fierce, unspoken call to arms. She understood, without me needing to articulate the unspeakable, that something was deeply wrong, that the world I was navigating was not the safe harbor it was meant to be.

One evening, as the sun bled streaks of orange and purple across the sky, painting the clouds in hues of bruised plum and soft rose, she found me tracing the faded emblem on the cover of the book. My fingers, usually so small and quick, moved with a deliberate slowness, as if trying to absorb some ancient wisdom from the fabric of the cloth.
