The late afternoon sun cast long, distorted shadows across the manicured lawns of Sterling Manor, painting the familiar landscape in hues of amber and rose. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of lemon polish and old money, a quiet hum of order that Elara had come to associate with her new life. She was in the west wing library, dusting a shelf of leather-bound volumes that hadn't likely been opened in years, when the heavy oak door creaked open.

Mr. Sterling stood framed in the doorway, his usual impeccable suit a stark contrast to the soft light filtering in. Beside him, however, was a man Elara hadn't seen before. He was tall, with a smile that seemed to reach his eyes, which were a startlingly bright blue. His dark hair was styled perfectly, and his tailored suit exuded an expensive, effortless charm.

"Elara," Mr. Sterling's voice was measured, as always, "this is Mr. Julian Vance. He has some business to discuss with me."
