Chapter 8
A Gardener's Wisdom
Mr. Sterling finds himself drawn to Elara's gentle nature, reminiscent of the care she gives the neglected manor gardens. He begins to see her strength and resilience, qualities he deeply admires and secretly longs for.
The late afternoon sun, a shy visitor through the perpetually overcast skies of the Sterling estate, cast long, skeletal shadows across the overgrown gardens. Elara, her hands stained with the rich, dark earth, knelt beside a wilting rosebush, her brow furrowed in concentration. She spoke to it softly, a murmur of encouragement, as if coaxing a shy child. It was a habit she’d picked up on the streets, a way of imbuing the inanimate with a semblance of life, a desperate plea against the pervasive silence.
The gardens were a testament to neglect, a tangled tapestry of weeds choking out once-proud blooms, their thorny tendrils reaching out like desperate fingers. This forgotten corner of the estate, much like Elara herself, had been left to languish. Yet, where others saw decay, Elara saw potential. She saw the ghosts of vibrant colours, the phantom scent of blossoms, and the promise of renewal. With every weed she pulled, every stone she moved, she was not just tending to plants; she was tending to a piece of herself, a small, defiant act of creation in a world that had tried to erase her.
She was so absorbed in her task, coaxing a stubborn bindweed from the base of the rose, that she didn’t hear the soft crunch of gravel behind her until a shadow fell over her. She startled, dropping her trowel with a clatter. Turning, she found Mr. Sterling standing a few feet away, his usual austere expression softened by an unreadable curiosity.
