Chapter 6
An Unexpected Counsel
Driven by compassion, Elara offers Mr. Sterling a simple observation, a fresh perspective born of her own struggles. To her surprise, he listens, finding solace and clarity in her words, a crack forming in his professional armor.
The air in Mr. Sterling’s study was thick with a tension that Elara could practically taste. It clung to the Persian rugs, settled in the dark wood of the bookshelves, and seemed to emanate from the very pores of the man himself. He sat hunched over his desk, the glow of the desk lamp casting harsh shadows across his already strained features. Papers were scattered around him like fallen leaves, a testament to the storm that had descended upon Sterling Enterprises. Elara, usually tasked with the quiet duties of tidying and serving, found herself lingering by the doorway, her heart a tight knot of concern. She’d seen worry before, in the eyes of those begging for scraps on the street, but this was different. This was the worry of a man who carried the weight of so many others on his shoulders.
Mr. Sterling rarely allowed anyone into this sanctuary of his work, least of all the household staff. Yet, tonight, the door had been left ajar, a silent invitation or perhaps an oversight born of sheer exhaustion. Elara hesitated. Her instructions were clear: maintain her tasks, keep a respectful distance, and never impose. But the sheer desperation etched on his face, the way his fingers worried the edge of a document as if it might snap, tugged at her innate sense of empathy. It reminded her, in a strange way, of the times she’d seen a stray dog whimpering, injured and alone, and the overwhelming urge to offer a gentle hand, a word of comfort.
She took a tentative step inside, her worn slippers making barely a whisper on the plush carpet. Mr. Sterling didn’t look up. He was too engrossed, too consumed by the labyrinth of figures and projections laid out before him. Elara cleared her throat softly. He flinched, a minute tremor that spoke volumes about his state of mind.
