While tending to his needs, Elara witnesses a rare moment of vulnerability from Mr. Sterling. A flicker of pain crosses his guarded features, sparking her empathy and a quiet curiosity about the man behind the stern facade.
The late afternoon sun, usually a warm caress through the grand windows of Sterling Manor, seemed to cast long, melancholic shadows across the polished floors. Elara moved with her usual quiet efficiency, dusting the mahogany surfaces of Mr. Sterling’s study, a room that always felt charged with an almost palpable tension. It was a space of power, of sharp edges and hushed importance, a reflection, she suspected, of the man who inhabited it.
She was polishing a heavy, leather-bound book, its spine embossed with faded gold lettering, when she heard the soft click of the door. Her movements stilled, a familiar reflex, her gaze flicking towards the entrance. Mr. Sterling stood there, silhouetted against the brighter light of the hallway. He usually strode in with purpose, his presence commanding, but today, he seemed to hesitate, his shoulders slightly slumped.
He walked towards his desk, not with his usual decisive stride, but with a weariness that Elara hadn’t seen before. He didn’t acknowledge her, his eyes fixed on some distant point beyond the room, beyond the manor, perhaps beyond the city itself. He sank into his chair, the worn leather sighing under his weight, and ran a hand over his face, pressing the heels of his palms against his closed eyes.
