The scent of roses, a fragrance Elara had only ever dreamed of on the cold, damp streets, now filled the air. It wasn't the fleeting sweetness of a wilting bloom found by chance, but the rich, intoxicating perfume of a thousand blossoms, each one chosen with care. These were not merely flowers; they were harbingers of a future so bright, it still made her eyes water with disbelief. Wedding preparations. The words themselves felt foreign, an echo from a life she had once observed from afar, a life belonging to others. Now, it was her life.

Mrs. Gable, her stern demeanor softened by an almost imperceptible warmth, was guiding Elara through a sea of silk swatches. The head housekeeper, once a figure of daunting authority, had become a surprisingly patient mentor. Elara, dressed in a simple but elegant day dress, a far cry from the worn rags that had been her constant companions, traced a finger over a particularly lustrous ivory fabric. It was meant for the reception linens, Mrs. Gable explained, her voice a low rumble of practical efficiency.

“And this,” Mrs. Gable continued, holding up a swatch of deep crimson velvet, “is for the ceremonial cushions. Mr. Sterling was quite particular about the colour.”
