Chapter 14
The Sterling Proposal
Emboldened by his public stand, Mr. Sterling takes Elara aside. With raw sincerity, he confesses his feelings and asks for her hand in marriage, offering her a future beyond her wildest dreams. Elara is overwhelmed.
The opulent ballroom, moments ago a sea of hushed murmurs and polite applause, now echoed with the lingering vibrations of Mr. Sterling’s declaration. Elara stood a little apart from the dispersing throng, her heart still thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The world, which had felt so solid and predictable just hours before, now seemed to shimmer and shift, like heat rising from summer asphalt. He offered a subtle nod, a silent invitation, and Elara, her legs feeling a little unsteady, moved towards him.
They found a quiet alcove, away from the lingering eyes and whispers. The air here was thick with the scent of jasmine from the arrangements on a nearby table, a fragrance that suddenly felt intensely intimate. Mr. Sterling turned to her, his expression a mixture of relief and a vulnerability she hadn't dared to imagine.
