Chapter 13
Beyond the EU Gazers
Raab's Mother operates outside established systems, her quest for truth unburdened by political structures, forging her own path.
Raab's Mother adjusted the worn, synth-leather strap of her satchel, the familiar weight a comforting presence against her hip. The city of Neo-Veridia hummed around her, a symphony of bioluminescent pathways and the soft whirring of automated transport. Yet, for Raab's Mother, the true melody lay not in the orchestrated efficiency of the sprawling metropolis, but in the discordant whispers that only she seemed to hear. She moved with a deliberate, unhurried grace, her gaze sweeping over the holographic advertisements that flickered and danced, their promises of enhanced realities and curated experiences holding little allure.
She had no need for the EU Gazers, the ubiquitous surveillance and information hubs that monitored every citizen’s digital footprint. Their watchful eyes, designed to ensure compliance and optimize productivity within the established order, were blind to the deeper currents that stirred beneath the surface. Raab's Mother operated in the spaces between, in the quiet pockets of existence where the official narratives frayed and the true nature of things began to reveal itself. Her journey was her own, guided by an inner compass and the enigmatic threads of the knitted garment she kept safely encased in its shimmering, protective plastic.
A sudden shimmer, like heat rising from a desert road, caught her eye. It wasn't the usual glitch in the visual feed; this was different, more organic, more… sad. A faint outline, translucent and wavering, coalesced in the middle of a busy thoroughfare, causing a momentary ripple of confusion among the passing automatons. They flowed around it, their programming unable to reconcile the anomaly. Raab's Mother, however, felt a familiar tug in her chest. It was a digital ghost, one she hadn't encountered before. It was small, no bigger than a child’s toy, and it seemed to be weeping, though no sound escaped its ethereal form.
