The air in the study, usually thick with the scent of old paper and dried ink, now carried a distinct undercurrent of something else – something metallic and cold, like a storm brewing just beyond the horizon. I traced the faded gilt lettering on the spellbook’s cover, my fingers catching on the rough texture of the aged leather. "Sundered Spellbook," it read, each word a whisper from a forgotten age. It felt less like an inheritance and more like a burden, a weighty secret suddenly thrust into my hands.
Max, usually a constant shadow at my heels, had taken to pacing the perimeter of the room, his tail tucked low, a low growl rumbling in his chest whenever my attention strayed too far from the book. He’d been restless since I’d unearthed it, his keen senses apparently picking up on the subtle hum of magic that now seemed to permeate the very walls of the farmhouse. He nudged my hand with his wet nose, his brown eyes filled with a concern that mirrored my own unease.
“It’s okay, boy,” I murmured, scratching behind his ears. “Just an old book.” But even as I said it, the lie felt thin, brittle. It was more than an old book. It was a Pandora’s Box, and I’d just pried open the lid.
