The air in the farmhouse had been thick with an unspoken tension for days. It was a palpable thing, a low thrum beneath the floorboards, a chill that had nothing to do with the autumn wind whistling through the eaves. Max, usually a whirlwind of happy chaos, had become a shadow, his golden fur bristling at unseen disturbances. He’d pace the length of the living room, his nose twitching, a low growl rumbling in his chest before he’d settle, his amber eyes fixed on some empty corner. I’d tried to rationalize it – new smells, unfamiliar sounds, the sheer age of the place – but even I, with my stubborn skepticism, couldn’t shake the feeling that something was watching us.

I was tracing a particularly intricate diagram, a swirling vortex of lines that seemed to pull at my gaze, when a sudden gust of wind, far stronger than any I’d felt before, slammed against the house. The old timbers groaned in protest, and a loose shutter outside banged rhythmically, a frantic, insistent beat. Max, who had been dozing by the hearth, sprang to his feet, a sharp bark escaping him. He raced to the front door, whining and scratching at the wood as if convinced some intruder was attempting to breach our sanctuary.
