The air in the farmhouse had always felt… heavy. Not in a suffocating way, but as if it held its breath, waiting. After the discovery of the spellbook, that weight had intensified, morphing into a palpable presence that prickled my skin and made Max’s fur stand on end. He’d been restless for days, his usual playful barks replaced by low growls directed at empty corners, his nose twitching at unseen currents. I’d dismissed it as his sensitivity to my own unease, but now, I wasn’t so sure.
It started subtly. A draft that snaked through the sun-drenched living room, even with all the windows sealed tight. A floorboard creaking upstairs when I was downstairs, and vice versa. One afternoon, while I was poring over the spellbook, a gust of wind, impossibly strong for the still air, swept through the kitchen, rustling pages that weren’t even near a window. Max, who had been dozing by the hearth, sprang to his feet, a low whine rumbling in his chest, and nudged my hand with his wet nose.
“What is it, boy?” I murmured, stroking his head, my eyes still scanning the arcane symbols on the parchment. The draft had picked up the very page I’d been struggling to decipher, a passage about wards and bindings. It fluttered, then settled, as if guided by an unseen hand, pointing directly to a specific glyph.
