The word ‘sundered’ had lodged itself in my mind like a splinter, refusing to be dislodged. It repeated in my thoughts, a low hum beneath the surface of my daily chores. I’d scrubbed every inch of this old farmhouse, coaxed life back into the overgrown garden, and even managed to coax a reluctant purr from the resident barn cat, Bartholomew. Yet, the spellbook, that dusty, leather-bound enigma, remained my constant companion, a silent question mark in the quiet of my new life.
I’d spent hours poring over its brittle pages, tracing the spidery script with my finger, trying to decipher the cryptic verses. The symbols were unlike anything I’d ever seen, swirling and sharp, hinting at a power that both thrilled and terrified me. The spells themselves were incomplete, fragmented, as if the words had been torn away, leaving only the barest whisper of intent. This was where the ‘sundered’ aspect came into play, I was sure of it. But sundered from what? And why?
One rainy afternoon, the kind that made the old farmhouse creak and groan like a ship at sea, I found myself back in the small, dusty room where I’d first discovered the book. Max, usually a bundle of restless energy, was unusually still, his ears perked, his gaze fixed on the corner where the spellbook lay on a makeshift stand. He let out a low growl, a sound that vibrated through the floorboards and into my bones.
