The air in the old farmhouse had a new quality to it, a hum beneath the usual creaks and groans that I’d come to associate with settling timbers. It had started subtly, a prickling on my skin whenever Max’s ears twitched towards a darkened corner, or when a draft seemed to materialize from nowhere, carrying with it the faint scent of rain on dry earth, even when the sky was clear. But tonight, it was different. Tonight, the house felt alive, and it was reacting.

It began with Silas. He’d arrived, as he always did, without announcement, a silhouette against the twilight that bled through the living room window. Max had let out a low growl, a sound that vibrated deep in his chest, and I’d felt a shiver trace a path down my spine. Silas’s eyes, when he stepped fully into the lamplight, were the color of a storm-tossed sea, and they fixed on the spellbook, which lay open on the worn oak table.

“You’ve been careless, Elara,” he’d said, his voice a low murmur that seemed to coil in the silence. “The book is a beacon. It draws attention.”
