The air in the Queen’s Land School library, usually a hushed sanctuary of learning, crackled with an almost palpable tension. Sunlight, usually a gentle visitor, seemed to slant through the tall, arched windows with a more insistent glare, illuminating dust motes dancing in the strained atmosphere. Ama, hunched over a tome on constitutional law, felt the familiar prickle of unease. It wasn’t the complexity of the material that bothered her; her mind, sharp and agile, relished such challenges. It was the subtle, persistent hum of rivalry that seemed to emanate from the very walls, a discord orchestrated, she suspected, by Delali.

Delali, a vision in perfectly tailored school uniform, sat at a nearby table, her back ramrod straight, her brow furrowed in a show of intense concentration. Yet, Ama couldn't shake the feeling that Delali’s focus wasn't entirely on her own studies. There were the sidelong glances, the almost imperceptible sighs that seemed to punctuate Ama’s every thoughtful pause, the way Delali’s pen would tap a fraction too loudly when Ama turned a page. It was a delicate dance of antagonism, a constant, low-grade hum designed to disrupt Ama’s concentration, to sow seeds of doubt.

“Still wrestling with Hobbes, Ama?” Delali’s voice, melodious and falsely sympathetic, cut through the quiet.
