Chapter 9
Unstable Energies
The inhabitants are a mix of hostility and caution. My control over my powers is tenuous, and frustration fuels my anger with every setback. I collapse from exhaustion.
The air here tasted like ozone and regret. Not my ozone, not my regret, but something alien and suffocating that clung to my tongue and the back of my throat. My powers, usually a humming, obedient symphony within me, were a chaotic orchestra of static and sputtering lights. Then, the ground beneath me shifted, not with the rumble of an earthquake, but with a sickening, biological undulation. Figures emerged from the swirling, unnatural mists. They were… wrong. Twisted, elongated limbs, eyes that glowed with an unsettling, predatory luminescence, and mouths that stretched far too wide, revealing rows of needle-sharp teeth. Hostility radiated from them in palpable waves, a palpable hunger. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drummer announcing my terror.
