The air tasted like ozone and regret. My head throbbed, a dull, insistent drum against the inside of my skull. I tried to focus, to piece together the fragmented images that swam behind my eyes – the blinding flash, the tearing sensation, the utter, gut-wrenching wrongness of it all. Where was I? The question echoed in the vast emptiness of my mind, a desperate plea lost in the cacophony of my own malfunctioning powers. They flickered, sputtered, like faulty streetlights in a storm. It was a terrifying sensation, like trying to breathe underwater, a constant struggle against an invisible tide. Panic, cold and sharp, began to prickle at the edges of my consciousness. I fought it, clawing at the edges of my sanity, but the sheer alienness of my surroundings was overwhelming. The sky above was a bruised, swirling canvas of colors I’d never seen, shifting and churning like a cosmic oil slick. The ground beneath my feet felt like solidified shadow, yielding slightly with each labored breath. Every instinct screamed danger, a primal alarm that vibrated through my very bones.

"What the hell… where am I?" The words were ripped from my throat, a ragged whisper that seemed to dissipate into the oppressive atmosphere. My rage, a familiar companion, began to coil in my gut, a hot, molten core against the icy grip of fear. This wasn't supposed to happen. I was Nova, Queen of the dimensional nexus, master of time and space. I should be back on Earth, basking in the familiar hum of my own dimension, not stranded in this… this nightmare. The injustice of it all fueled the inferno within me. I needed control, desperately. I focused, channeling the familiar energy, the spark that always ignited my powers. Time. Freeze. The world around me juddered, then stilled. The swirling sky became a static masterpiece, the shadowy ground frozen in its unsettling texture. I took a shuddering breath, the relative silence a balm to my frayed nerves. Earth. I needed Earth. With another surge of will, I pictured it, etched it into my mind’s eye – the sprawling cityscape, the familiar scent of rain on asphalt, the comforting chaos of human life. Then, with a wrench that felt like my soul was being torn in two, I pushed. The temporal currents, usually so obedient, bucked and fought against me. It was like trying to steer a runaway train with a thread. But I held on, my knuckles white, my teeth clenched. The world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of impossible colors and disorienting sensations. And then, with a sickening lurch, I landed.

The familiar weight of gravity slammed into me, knocking the wind out of my lungs. I gasped, coughing, my eyes snapping open. I was on Earth. Or, at least, a version of it. The sky was a pale, washed-out blue, devoid of the vibrant, alien hues I’d just left. The air smelled… normal. But something was still off. The buildings were too angular, too stark. The people… they moved with a peculiar, jerky gait, their faces blank, their eyes vacant. As I struggled to my feet, my powers flared again, a chaotic burst of energy that sent a nearby lamppost toppling. A few of the passing figures stopped, their vacant eyes fixing on me. There was no fear, no curiosity, just a chillingly passive observation. Then, from the shadows of an alleyway, emerged a group of them. They were different. Clad in dark, utilitarian armor, their movements were sharp, predatory. Their eyes, unlike the others, burned with a cold, intelligent malice. The Shadow Syndicate. I recognized the chilling aura of their kind, the territorial aggression that marked them as a threat.
