Chapter 12
The Heart's Anchor
A painful truth about my displacement surfaces, bringing sorrow but strengthening my resolve. In the darkest hour, a pure, unexpected love offers solace.
The air tasted like ozone and something akin to burnt sugar, a cloying sweetness that made my teeth ache. My head throbbed, a dull, insistent drumbeat against the inside of my skull. Where was I? The question clawed at my throat, raw and desperate. This wasn't Earth. The sky here was a bruised purple, streaked with veins of sickly green light that pulsed like a dying heart. For a terrifying moment, nothing happened. Then, with a wrenching sensation that felt like my very soul was being torn asunder, the world stuttered. The pulsing green light froze mid-throb, the twisted buildings ceased their silent scream towards the sky. The burnt-sugar air hung still. I was on Earth, or at least, it looked like it. The familiar blue sky, the comforting solidity of concrete beneath my boots – it was a stark, almost mocking contrast to the dimension I’d just fled. But the relief was short-lived. The phantom tingle persisted, a constant reminder of my fractured state.
