The chipped ceramic mug felt cold against Aris’s palms, its warmth a distant memory like the sun on a winter’s day. He traced the hairline crack that snaked across its surface, a familiar imperfection in his otherwise sterile apartment. The pocket watch, nestled on a velvet cloth on his desk, pulsed with a faint, almost imperceptible luminescence, a silent testament to the impossible now residing within his grasp. Chapters one, two, and three had been a descent into a rabbit hole he’d long ago sworn to avoid. The cryptic package, the impossible watch, the unsettling glimpses of what might have been – it all pointed back to Elias Vance, his mentor, the ghost in his professional and personal history.

A sharp rap on his door shattered the quiet hum of his thoughts. Not the hesitant knock of a delivery person, but a decisive, almost urgent sound. Aris’s heart gave a familiar, unwelcome lurch. He hadn’t ordered anything. He hadn’t contacted anyone. He rose slowly, his movements betraying a weariness that went beyond mere lack of sleep. The shadows in the corners of his vision seemed to deepen, as if sensing an impending shift.

He peered through the peephole. A woman stood there, her face framed by a sensible bob of dark hair, her eyes sharp and knowing. It took him a second, a jarring jolt of recognition, to place her. Lena Hanson. Vance’s colleague, a woman he’d always found intensely pragmatic, almost unnervingly so. They’d worked on a few projects together years ago, before Aris’s own fall from grace. He hadn’t seen her since.
