I’d found myself back in this small, rented room, the kind that smelled perpetually of stale cigarettes and desperation, a place I’d sworn I’d left behind, a place that always seemed to draw me back like a moth to a dying flame. The rain lashed against the grimy windowpane, mirroring the tempest in my chest. My hands trembled, not from the chill, but from a familiar gnawing anxiety, the kind that tightened its grip whenever the silence became too loud, too revealing.
For weeks, maybe months, I’d been playing this game, this agonizing dance between the light and the dark. One moment, I’d be on my knees, tears streaming, whispering apologies to a God I felt I’d long since forfeited. What makes you think this time will be any different? You’re a lost cause, Elijah. Just accept it. It was a smooth, practiced venom, laced with a truth that was hard to deny. Every time I thought I had a foothold, every time I felt that flicker of genuine hope, something would pull me back down, often by my own hand.
