Chapter 8
The Gate of Beginnings
The child stands before the First Gate, now stabilized. The artifact secured, the first step is taken, but the path ahead is fraught with peril and uncertainty.
The air in my room thrummed, not with the usual quiet hum of the refrigerator downstairs, but with a deeper, more resonant vibration. It felt like the inside of a bell, struck softly, endlessly. My eyes, usually so quick to spot a dust mote dancing in a sunbeam, were drawn to a place where the wall met the ceiling, a corner that had always been just a corner, a place for shadows to gather. But now, it was… other. A shimmering, like heat rising from a summer road, but cool and tinged with the colours of a rainbow after a storm. It wasn’t just light; it was like looking through a window into a thousand other windows, each one showing a different sky. I blinked, hard, but the shimmer remained, a silent, insistent invitation.
Then, a voice, thin as a spider’s silk, slithered into my awareness. “Nine gates,” it whispered, so close I felt breath on my ear, though no one was there. “Nine gates… and the balance is fraying.” I spun around, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. My shadow, usually a faithful, flat companion on the floor, seemed to detach itself, elongating, deepening. It wasn’t just dark; it was a deeper, more ancient darkness, with eyes that gleamed like chips of obsidian. “They tamper,” the shadow hissed, its form rippling. “The Chronos Serpent… he cracks the weave.”
Before I could even form a question, a dizzying lurch seized me. The walls of my room dissolved, not into nothingness, but into a kaleidoscope of moments. I saw a field of sunflowers, taller than houses, their faces turned towards a sun that pulsed with an unnatural, violet light. Then, the scene fractured, and I was staring at a bustling city street, but the buildings were made of crystal and the people wore robes woven from moonlight. A fleeting image of a massive, scaled creature, its eyes burning with a cold, green fire, flickered at the edge of my vision. Time wasn’t a river; it was a tangled knot, and I was caught in its unraveling.
