Guardian of the First Light

The air in my room, usually thick with the scent of old books and dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun, began to hum. Not a sound, not really, but a vibration that settled deep in my bones, making my teeth ache. It started as a faint shimmer, like heat rising from summer asphalt, near the corner where my bookshelf leaned precariously. Then, it deepened, coalescing into a swirling vortex of colors I’d never seen, colors that tasted like starlight and felt like forgotten dreams. My breath hitched. This was no ordinary dust mote.

A voice, a breath of a whisper, slithered from the deepest shadow cast by my desk. “The Gates… they weaken.” It was Nyx, the shadow that sometimes danced in my periphery, the one I always dismissed as tricks of the light. But today, Nyx’s voice was laced with an urgency that scraped against my nerves. “The weave frays. The First Gate… it bleeds.”

Before I could even question what Nyx meant, the shimmering intensified. It pulsed, a gentle heartbeat at first, then a frantic thrum. The walls of my room seemed to melt, stretching and blurring like watercolors left out in the rain. For a fleeting, terrifying instant, I saw my room not as it was, but as it might have been. A younger me, with scraped knees and a missing front tooth, giggled in the corner, chasing a phantom butterfly. Then, a future me, older, with lines etched around her eyes, sat hunched over a glowing screen, her face illuminated by an unfamiliar light. The visions flickered, a rapid-fire slideshow of moments that never were, or perhaps, moments that still could be. A dizzying wave washed over me, and I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to anchor myself to the familiar, solid floor beneath my bare feet.
