Having restored the Third Gate, the child faces the Fourth Gate: the Gate of Vigilance. It guards against foresight, a tricky challenge for one who sees glimpses of the future.
The attic dust motes danced in the splintered sunlight, remnants of a battle I’d barely comprehended. The Third Gate, the Gate of Song, hummed with a settled peace, a quiet melody that resonated deep within my bones. But peace was a fleeting thing, a breath held before the next storm. Nyx, a wisp of deeper shadow against the already dim corners, coalesced beside me, their form a ripple in the air. “The song fades, Elara,” they whispered, their voice like dry leaves skittering across stone. “The vigil begins.”
Vigil. The word tasted strange, heavy and foreboding. I’d stumbled through the Gate of Song, my heart aching with the echoes of its music, the joy and sorrow woven into its very fabric. Now, a new path beckoned, a shimmering doorway that pulsed with an uneasy light, not the warm glow of the Third, but a cold, assessing gleam. It felt like being watched, not by eyes, but by something far older, far more pervasive.
“The Fourth Gate,” I murmured, the name a half-formed thought. Nyx simply inclined their head, a gesture that suggested an untold story. “It guards against foresight,” they elaborated, their voice a silken thread in the musty air. “It is the Gate of Vigilance. It demands that one see, truly see, without being blinded by what is yet to be.”
