The air in my room, usually so still and predictable, began to hum. It wasn’t the hum of the refrigerator downstairs, or the distant drone of traffic. This was a hum that vibrated deep in my bones, a sound that felt like it was being sung by the light itself. A shimmer, like heat rising from asphalt on a scorching day, began to bloom in the corner where my bookshelf met the wall. It pulsed, a gentle, almost shy ripple, then widened, stretching like a yawn. My breath hitched. It was like looking through a flawed window, a distortion in the fabric of my own world.

“Elara,” a voice, thin as a spider’s silk, whispered from the deeper shadows of my wardrobe. It wasn't Maman or Papa. This voice was ancient, like dust and forgotten secrets. I spun around, my heart a frantic bird against my ribs. Nothing. Just my clothes, hanging limp and silent.

“Do not fear,” the voice breathed again, closer this time, coalescing from the dimness. A shadow detached itself from the corner, not a solid shape, but a shifting, indistinct form that seemed to absorb the light around it. It was Nyx, the whispering shadow. It had spoken to me before, in the hushed moments when the world felt too loud, too real. “The tapestry frays. The discord grows.”
