Chapter 14
The Third Gate's Song
The child journeys towards the Third Gate, the Gate of Harmony. Its power lies in balance, but discord sown by the Serpent threatens its very existence.
The world shimmered, not with the familiar warmth of sunlight, but with an unsettling, watery distortion. My room, usually a haven of crayon drawings and mismatched socks, felt alien. The air hummed with a low thrum, like a trapped bee against glass. I’d seen this before, in my drawings – impossible geometries, swirling colours that defied logic. But this was real. My breath hitched. A shadow detached itself from the corner, not dark and menacing, but a rippling silhouette, like ink spilled on water. “Elara,” it whispered, the sound like rustling leaves. “The Gates… they weep. The Serpent’s song is discord.”
My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Gates? Serpents? This was too much. I squeezed my eyes shut, willing the strangeness to recede, but when I opened them, my room fractured. One moment, the familiar wallpaper, the next, a blur of towering, crystal cities under a sky of liquid gold. Then, a desolate wasteland, cracked and empty, with a single, skeletal tree clawing at the bruised sky. A gasp escaped me. It was like flipping through a thousand lifetimes in the blink of an eye. My own life flickered too – a younger me, giggling in a sun-drenched meadow, then an older me, standing on a precipice, tears tracing paths down a weathered face. The world spun, a dizzying kaleidoscope of what was, what could be, and what would never be.
A voice, like chimes made of starlight, cut through the chaos. “Brave one. You see the cracks. You feel the fraying threads.” A figure coalesced before me, spun from mist and shimmering light. It was tall, regal, its form shifting like heat haze on a summer road. Eyes like captured nebulae regarded me with ancient patience. “I am the Lumina Weaver, guardian of the First Gate. You have witnessed the ripples of imbalance. The Serpent’s venom spreads.”
