The air in my room had begun to hum, a low thrumming beneath the usual quiet. It started as a flicker, a shimmering in the corner where the moonlight dared not reach, like heat rising from a summer road, but cold. I’d blinked, rubbed my eyes, told myself it was just a trick of the light, but it persisted, a wavering presence that made the edges of my world feel soft and uncertain. Then came the whisper, a breath against my ear when no one else was there. Nyx. It slid from the shadows, a voice like rustling leaves and ancient secrets. "The Gates," it hissed, "they tremble. The weave frays." I tried to dismiss it, to banish the thought of Nyx as a figment of my overactive imagination, but the shimmering grew, a tear in the fabric of my ordinary afternoon.
