Chapter 10
The Labyrinth of Lost Time
To reach the Second Gate, the child must navigate a shifting labyrinth where time itself is distorted. Illusions and echoes of forgotten moments test their perception.
The air in my room thrummed, a low hum that vibrated not just in my ears, but deep in my bones. It was like the world was holding its breath, a nervous tremor before a storm. A shimmer, like heat rising from summer asphalt, danced in the corner near my bookshelf. It wasn’t the sun; my curtains were drawn tight against the encroaching dusk. This was different, a rip in the fabric of the ordinary, a fleeting glimpse of something *else*. I blinked, and it was gone, leaving behind only the familiar scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in the fading light.

I froze, my heart a frantic hummingbird against my ribs. It wasn't a voice I knew, yet it felt ancient, heavy with secrets. "The Nine Gates," it continued, the words weaving through the quiet like dark threads. "Balance…broken."
My hands flew to my mouth, stifling a gasp. The Nine Gates. Nyx, the shadow that sometimes flickered at the edge of my vision, the one I’d always dismissed as an overactive imagination, had spoken. And it spoke of things I couldn't comprehend, of gates that held the world together. As if in response to my fear, the shimmer returned, stronger this time, blooming into a swirling vortex of light and color. The walls of my room seemed to melt, reforming into scenes I’d never witnessed. I saw a bustling marketplace under a sky of twin moons, then a silent, snow-laden forest where ancient trees whispered forgotten names, and then… a city of glass, reaching impossibly high, bathed in an alien, emerald sun. Time twisted and buckled, a frantic kaleidoscope of moments, past, present, and future colliding in a dizzying rush. I stumbled back, my head spinning, the world tilting precariously.
