The air in the First Gate’s realm shimmered, heavy with the scent of ancient dust and forgotten dreams. Purlis clutched the object he had wrestled from the clutches of the illusionary guardian – a compass, its brass casing cool and strangely resonant against his palm. It wasn’t like any compass he had ever seen. Instead of a needle pointing north, a sliver of moonlight seemed to dance within its glass, a captive star forever searching. And it whispered.

At first, it was a faint murmur, like wind rustling through dry leaves. Purlis held it closer, straining to discern the meaning in the ethereal sounds. The Oracle Owl, perched on a gnarled branch that twisted like petrified lightning, watched him with eyes like twin pools of obsidian. “The artifact,” the owl hooted, its voice a low rumble that vibrated in Purlis’s bones, “is a vessel of echoes. It does not point the way, child, but reveals what is already known, though buried deep.”

Purlis nodded, his brow furrowed. The compass’s whispers grew, coalescing into fragmented words, snatches of intent that pricked at his mind. *“Threads… unraveling… a tapestry torn… shadows lengthen… the Weaver’s design…”* It wasn’t a coherent message, but a mosaic of dread, each piece sharp and unsettling. He saw glimpses, fleeting images that flashed behind his eyes: a city of clockwork gears grinding to a halt, stars winking out like snuffed candles, a hand, cloaked in darkness, reaching for something vast and unknowable.
