Chapter 4
The First Gate's Illusion
Purlis must enter the First Gate's realm, facing disorienting illusions and trials designed to test his courage and keen observation.
The air within the hollow of the ancient oak pulsed with a silent hum, a vibration that tickled Purlis’s fingertips as he reached out towards the shimmering veil. It was not quite a door, nor was it simply light. It was a breath held between breaths, a moment suspended just before the dawn. The Oracle Owl, perched on a gnarled branch above, watched with eyes like polished obsidian, its head cocked in a gesture of ancient patience. “The first gate,” it hooted softly, the sound like dry leaves skittering across stone, “is not a place to be entered, but a truth to be seen. illusions dance where reality fears to tread.”
Purlis swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. He had solved the owl’s riddle, a feat that had filled him with a strange, quiet pride. Now, the true test began. He took a deep breath, the scent of damp earth and old wood filling his lungs, and stepped through the shimmering curtain.
The world dissolved. For a dizzying instant, Purlis felt as though he were falling, not through space, but through time itself. Colors bled into one another, sounds warped and distorted, and the solid ground beneath his feet became a shifting, uncertain canvas. He squeezed his eyes shut, his knuckles white where he gripped the worn leather satchel slung across his shoulder. He remembered the owl’s words: *a truth to be seen*. He forced himself to open his eyes, to look, not just at what was there, but at what *seemed* to be there.
