Chapter 12
The River of Forgotten Dreams
Navigating the Seventh Gate involves crossing a river that reflects forgotten dreams, forcing Purlis to confront his own subconscious.
The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone and something else, something like forgotten childhood wishes. Purlis stood at the edge of a river, not of water, but of liquid moonlight, its surface rippling with the ghostly images of what might have been. This was the Seventh Gate, a passage not of stone or wood, but of the soul. The Oracle Owl’s final riddle echoed in his mind: *“Where yesterday’s shadows dance with tomorrow’s light, and what you have lost finds its spectral flight, there lies the path, both dark and bright.”*
He looked into the shimmering current, and saw not his own reflection, but the faces of dreams he’d long since tucked away. A pirate ship, sails billowing with wind he’d never felt. A castle made of candy, its towers sweet and inviting. A world where he could fly, soaring above the familiar trees of his village, the wind a silken scarf against his skin. These were the forgotten dreams, the might-have-beens, the paths not taken.
A sigh escaped his lips, a puff of mist that dissolved into the dream-river. He’d learned from the Oracle Owl that the Seventh Gate guarded not an artifact, but a truth. The truth of what lay buried within one’s own heart, a truth the Shadow Weaver sought to exploit. This river was a mirror to the subconscious, and to cross it, Purlis had to face the specters of his own unfulfilled desires.
