The awards ceremony for the Great Aroma Festival was less a grand affair and more a slightly damp, slightly sticky gathering under the town hall’s leaky awning. A persistent drizzle had turned the usually cheerful town square into a landscape of muddy puddles and drooping bunting. Mayor Mildred Muffin, ever the optimist, stood behind a wobbly podium, her sequined dress shimmering with a defiant, if slightly desperate, cheerfulness. Barnaby and Cecil, perched on the edge of a hay bale that had seen better days, tried to look nonchalant, their earlier triumph – or rather, their *shared* unique scent – still clinging to them like a particularly stubborn fog.
Agnes, bless her pragmatic heart, stood with her arms crossed, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. She’d endured the entire festival, from Barnaby’s attempt to ferment cabbage in his sock drawer for three weeks to Cecil’s misguided venture into aging a wheel of cheese in his attic. She’d even been the unfortunate recipient of a stray spritz from Barnaby’s “Essence of Despair” cologne (a concoction involving week-old coffee grounds and a hint of existential dread).
“And now,” Mayor Muffin’s voice boomed, amplified by a slightly crackly microphone, “for our final, and perhaps most… *innovative* award! The prize for ‘Most Distinctive Aroma’!”
