Mayor Mildred Muffin beamed, her rosy cheeks practically glowing under the late afternoon sun. She stood on a makeshift stage fashioned from hay bales and brightly colored bunting, surveying the scene of the Great Aroma Festival with an air of profound satisfaction. A gentle breeze, thankfully, carried away the more pungent exhalations of the day, leaving behind a general hum of happy chatter and the lingering scent of slightly overcooked funnel cake.

“My dear citizens!” she boomed, her voice amplified by a slightly crackly microphone. “What an absolutely *spectacular* Aroma Festival this has been!”

A smattering of applause rippled through the crowd. Agnes Periwinkle, standing near the edge of the throng, offered a polite clap, her expression a mixture of relief and weary amusement. She’d spent most of the day strategically positioning herself upwind of Barnaby and Cecil, a task that had proven more challenging than anticipated. Their attempts to out-stink each other had reached new heights of olfactory absurdity, and while she’d maintained her composure, her nostrils had certainly seen better days.
