The air in this part of the forest felt different. Not colder, not warmer, but… thicker, somehow. Like a blanket woven from moss and secrets. Mama had spoken of places like this, where the trees stood closer, their branches tangled like old friends sharing hushed conversations. I clutched the shiny object tighter in my paw. The light filtered through the canopy in dappled patterns, illuminating patches of earth and the gnarled roots of ancient trees. It was here, in this quiet, sun-dappled clearing, that I first sensed another presence. A stillness that wasn't the stillness of the forest itself, but the stillness of something holding its breath.
