The symbol, etched onto the smooth, cool surface of the shiny object, pulsed faintly in my paw. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before, not a leaf, not a twig, not even the iridescent shimmer of a beetle’s wing. Mama had traced it with her own, gentler paw, her brow furrowed in a way that made my own furry head prickle with a mix of excitement and apprehension. “This,” she had murmured, her voice a soft rustle of leaves, “is a sign. A sign of things not often seen.”

And now, the sign was urging us onward, deeper into the woods than I usually dared to venture. The familiar paths, worn smooth by countless paws and hooves, gave way to a tangled undergrowth where sunlight struggled to pierce the thick canopy. The trees here were ancient, their bark gnarled and moss-covered, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The air grew quieter, the usual chirping of birds and chattering of squirrels replaced by a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate not just in my ears, but in my very bones. It was a sound that spoke of secrets, of hidden things, of a magic that slumbered just beneath the surface of the world.

Mama walked beside me, her gaze steady, her presence a comforting anchor in this unfamiliar territory. She didn’t rush, her steps measured and deliberate, as if she were reading the story of the forest in the way the light fell, or the way the wind whispered through the leaves. I, on the other hand, felt a restless energy thrumming through me. My whiskers twitched, gathering in the scents of damp earth, decaying leaves, and something else… something sharp and sweet, like crushed berries and starlight. Every rustle in the undergrowth made me jump, my heart giving a little thump against my ribs. Was it an animal? Or was it something else, something drawn by the same strange pull that had led us here?
