It pulsed, a gentle thrumming against my fur, like a tiny bird trapped inside, beating its wings with quiet joy. Deividas, usually so still, shifted his weight, his nose twitching. He hadn’t spoken for a long time, his wide eyes fixed on the object, a mixture of awe and perhaps a touch of unease clouding his usually placid face.
“It’s… it’s not gold, is it, Mama?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, afraid to break the delicate spell that had settled over us. The words felt strange on my tongue, echoing the quiet disappointment that was beginning to bloom in my chest. All those tales of glittering hoards, of lost riches, and here we were, holding something that pulsed with light and warmth, but offered no jingling coins, no sparkling gems to fill a treasure chest.
Mama’s gentle hand rested on my shoulder, her touch a familiar comfort. “No, little one,” she murmured, her eyes crinkling at the corners. She looked at the object, then at the cave walls, which seemed to glow faintly in response to its presence. “It is not a treasure in the way you might imagine. It is something far more precious.”
