The Truth Within the Spire
Jaxson and Henderson enter the Phoenix Spire and confront the Overlord. The Overlord reveals he is Jaxson's biological father, and the source of Jaxson's powers. Shocked, Jaxson struggles with the revelation but ultimately chooses to fight for San Francisco. Henderson sacrifices himself to overload the spire's energy matrix, giving Jaxson the opening to defeat the Overlord. The chapter ends with the spire collapsing and Jaxson mourning his mentor.
The Phoenix Spire loomed above them, a dark tower of glass and steel that seemed to drink the moonlight. The sickly green glow pulsed from its core, casting shifting shadows across the crumbling stone of Alcatraz. Jaxson's side still throbbed from the ninja's blade, but the locket against his chest burned with a steady warmth, anchoring him to the present.
Henderson moved ahead, his movements cautious but purposeful. "The control room is at the top. Marcus will be waiting. He'll try to use your emotions against you, Jaxson. Don't let him."
Jaxson nodded, but his mind raced. The Overlord had known they were coming. He had sent those ninja to test them, to weaken them. And now, as they stepped through the spire's entrance, the air grew heavy with the hum of power.
