Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Dale and Skye return from the coast, carrying the cottage's quiet magic into their everyday lives. As they begin to merge their worlds—sorting through boxes, sharing meals, and learning the small rhythms of each other—Dale's old insecurities surface, only to be met with Skye's gentle reassurance. A conversation about the future leads them to a decision that feels both ordinary and profound: they will build a home together, not in a place, but in the daily act of choosing each other. The chapter ends with them standing in Skye's apartment at dusk, realizing that their journey is no longer about becoming, but about being—together.
The drive back from the coast was quiet, but not the heavy kind. It was the comfortable silence of two people who had said everything that needed saying and were content to let the words settle. Dale kept his hand on Skye's knee, her fingers interlaced with his, the silver band on her finger catching the light every time they passed through a patch of sun.
She watched the landscape change from wild cliffs to rolling hills to the familiar outskirts of the city. The sky had cleared, and the afternoon sun painted everything in soft gold. Dale glanced at her every few minutes, as if to confirm she was still there, still real. Each time, she caught his eye and smiled, and he felt something loosen in his chest.
They stopped at a small diner halfway back, the kind of place with cracked vinyl booths and a jukebox that played songs from decades they had never lived through. She ordered a slice of cherry pie and he ordered coffee, and they shared both, passing the plate back and forth. She told him about the time she had gotten lost on a road trip in college and ended up at a diner exactly like this one, where an old waitress had given her a piece of pie and told her that everything would work out.
