The morning came without ceremony, a soft gray dawn that promised rain. Dale woke to the sound of his phone buzzing on the nightstand. The screen glowed with a message from Skye: "Meet me at the station at nine. Bring a jacket."
He blinked, sleep still clinging to him. A jacket. The station. It was the kind of vague, spontaneous invitation that would have once sent his mind spinning into a thousand anxious possibilities. But now, it felt like an adventure.
He showered, dressed in layers—a worn flannel, his favorite denim jacket—and grabbed a light backpack. He paused at the door, looking around the apartment. The plant Skye had given him sat on the windowsill, its leaves reaching toward the weak light. The sketch of the man at the cliff was still pinned above it, a small, quiet reminder of how far he had come.
