Chapter 23
Chapter 23: Twice the Heartbeat
A month passes. Dale's tenderness and domestic rituals deepen as he prepares for fatherhood, while Skye watches him grow into the man she always believed he could be. A routine ultrasound reveals she is carrying twins, and Dale is overcome with joy, pride, and the quiet certainty that this is exactly where he belongs.
A month had passed, and the café had settled into its own quiet rhythm. The morning rush had become a familiar dance—Dale behind the griddle, flipping pancakes with a precision that bordered on art, while Skye worked the register and poured coffee with her easy smile. The regulars had names now. George always ordered the blueberry stack; Patricia, a retired librarian, asked for her latte with an extra shot and no foam. Dale knew their orders before they spoke, and Skye knew the shape of their lives—the grandkids, the new job, the cat that had died. It was a small world they had built, warm and unpretentious, and it paid for itself.
But Dale's mind was rarely on the café anymore. It was on her.
The pregnancy had changed him in ways Skye was still discovering. He had become a man of rituals. Every morning, before the first customer arrived, he would bring her a cup of ginger tea and a slice of buttered toast, placing it on the counter beside her with a soft kiss on her temple. He had read three books on pregnancy, two on infant care, and one on the philosophy of early childhood development, which Skye had teased him about until he quoted a passage about the importance of wonder in the first years of life. She had stopped teasing then, her eyes widening with something like awe.
