The dinner was simple—pasta and wine at a small Italian place two blocks from the empty storefront. Dale watched Skye twirl noodles around her fork, her face soft in the candlelight. The fear from earlier had faded, replaced by something quieter, more fragile. Hope, maybe. Or the kind of exhaustion that comes after a leap.
"I can't believe we did that," she said, setting down her fork. "We signed a lease."
"We made a deposit. The lease is Friday."
