The air in Prevail’s small hut hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and a gnawing unease. The villagers, once so eager for his touch, now looked at him with a mixture of apprehension and disappointment. The vibrant fields, so recently lush and promising under his burgeoning magic, lay withered and barren, a stark testament to his folly. The whispers that had once praised his obedience now carried a mournful undertone, a chorus of regret for the bounty lost. Prevail, his heart a heavy stone in his chest, felt the weight of their collective sorrow pressing down on him, a burden far heavier than any he had ever known. He had listened, as always, but this time, his obedience had led them to ruin.

He remembered the merchant's honeyed words, the glint in his eyes as he spoke of greater harvests, of a prosperity that would dwarf anything the village had ever seen. “Just a little more, Prevail,” the merchant had cajoled, his voice smooth as river stones. “A touch more of that wondrous power, and your village will feast like kings. Think of the elders, Prevail. Think of their comfort. Think of their gratitude.” Prevail, eager to please, eager to fulfill the promise of his gift, had pushed his powers, ignoring the faint tremor of warning in his spirit. He had obeyed, and the land had screamed in protest.

Now, the merchant was nowhere to be found, his promises dissolved like mist in the morning sun. He had reaped his harvest of greed, leaving Prevail to face the barren fields and the accusing silence of his people. Shame burned in Prevail’s gut, a bitter ember that threatened to consume him. He had been a fool, a puppet dancing to the tune of a man who cared nothing for their well-being.
