Chapter 4
Shadows Resurface
Just as Tessa begins to truly believe in the safety and joy James offers, a chilling shadow from her past looms. Jeffrey, a man who embodies the pain and fear she’s worked so hard to outrun, reappears. His presence is a jarring disruption, a sudden return of the old anxieties. He corners Tessa, his words laced with possessiveness and threats, attempting to drag her back into the darkness she escaped. The fragile peace she’s built with James is suddenly threatened, and Tessa’s deepest fears resurface, testing the strength of her newfound happiness.
The clink of ice in her glass was a familiar, comforting sound, a small anchor in the vast sea of possibilities James had opened for her. Tessa swirled the amber liquid, watching the light catch the liquid, a miniature sun in her hand. The bar, once a place of solitary escape, now hummed with a different kind of energy, one warmed by shared laughter and the lingering scent of James’s cologne. They had just returned from a trip to Kyoto, the memory of cherry blossoms and ancient temples still vivid in her mind. James had unfurled a silk fan for her, its delicate painted cranes mirroring the flutter in her own chest. He’d taught her a few phrases in Japanese, his voice a soft murmur against her ear as he corrected her pronunciation, and she’d felt a lightness she hadn’t known existed.
“You’re quiet tonight, my love,” James’s voice, a deep, resonant hum, broke through her reverie. He reached across the small table, his fingers brushing hers, a touch that sent a familiar warmth spreading through her. It was a touch that had, over the past few months, become a source of solace, not fear.
Tessa offered a small smile, turning her hand to intertwine her fingers with his. “Just… remembering Kyoto. It was all so beautiful. I can’t believe you made that happen.” The words still felt a little surreal. Exotic trips, yes, but the sheer generosity, the way he orchestrated experiences for her, it was overwhelming, in the best possible way. He never seemed to expect anything in return, only her joy.
