The scent of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comforting balm to Elara’s soul, now seemed to cling to her like a shroud. The cafe buzzed with its usual midday clamor – the clatter of ceramic cups, the murmur of conversations, the hiss of the espresso machine. But none of it reached her. Her gaze was fixed, not on the worn counter or the impatient customers, but on the small, framed photograph tucked discreetly beneath the chipped ceramic pot on her bedside table. It was a picture of her and Liam, taken a few weeks ago, their faces alight with the shared joy of their collaborative painting. His arm was casually slung around her shoulders, her head tilted towards his, a genuine, unguarded smile gracing her lips. It felt like a lifetime ago.
The photograph, a tangible reminder of their burgeoning connection, now felt like a cruel taunt. The ‘cracks’ had begun subtly, almost imperceptibly, like hairline fractures in a glaze. It started with a phone call from Liam’s mother. Elara had been in her tiny studio, the cramped space smelling of turpentine and dreams, when her phone, a relic from a bygone era, had buzzed insistently. Liam’s name flashed on the screen, and a familiar flutter of anticipation had risen in her chest. But it wasn’t Liam. It was a crisp, cultured voice, laced with an unmistakable tone of polite dismissal.
"Miss Vance?" the voice had inquired, the name sounding foreign on the woman's tongue. "This is Mrs. Sterling. Liam’s mother."
