The afternoon sun, usually a warm, benevolent presence over the quiet street, seemed to cast a cooler, more anxious light on the Davis residence. Inside, the air crackled with a tension that had been brewing for weeks, perhaps even months. Alex Davis, a boy whose bright eyes often held a shadow of unease, was at the epicenter of it all. Today, the storm that had been gathering within him finally broke.

It started, as it often did, with a misplaced toy. A bright red race car, a treasured possession, vanished from his room. For any child, this would be a minor inconvenience, a brief hunt. But for Alex, it was the trigger, the last straw in a day already laden with parental critiques and impossible expectations. His mother, Mrs. Davis, had been particularly sharp-edged, her voice a constant hum of correction. “Alex, sit up straight. Alex, don’t dawdle. Alex, why can’t you ever…” The unfinished sentences hung in the air, heavy with unspoken disappointment.

Now, the car was gone. Alex’s small chest heaved, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He searched frantically, overturning cushions, rummaging through toy bins, his movements growing wilder with each passing second. His father, Mr. Davis, a man more comfortable with spreadsheets than emotional outbursts, entered the room with a sigh. “Alex, what is all this mess? Your mother just cleaned this room.”
