Chapter 7

Awakening the Tide

Adrift and alone, Maeve washes ashore on a desolate, mist-wreathed island. The storm’s fury has stripped away everything, forcing her to confront the deepest wells of her fear and the raw power she has long suppressed. In the desperate fight for survival, an untamed magic, dormant within her lineage, begins to stir. It surges through her veins, a wild, elemental force, responding to her desperation. Finn, battered but alive, finds his way to her, his presence a balm to her fractured spirit. Maeve realizes this power, once a source of her own dread, might be their only hope.

The churning grey maw of the sea had spat Maeve out onto a shore of bruised sand and skeletal driftwood. Her lungs burned, each gasp a ragged tear through the salt-laced air. The storm, a beast of unnatural fury, had snatched the *Sea Serpent’s Kiss* from its mooring, splintering mast and sail, scattering her crew like chaff in its merciless breath. Now, only the desolate murmur of waves and the mournful cry of gulls remained. She was alone, save for the chilling embrace of the mist that clung to the jagged teeth of the island.

Her limbs felt heavy, leaden with the ocean’s weight, but a flicker, a spark of defiance, ignited within her. She was Maeve O’Malley, daughter of tax collectors who had learned to breathe the wild air of freedom, sister to Liam, whose brilliance burned as fiercely as his despair, and captain of a ship that was now a memory. She would not be consumed by this vast, indifferent expanse. Not yet.

The mist coiled and uncoiled, a living shroud that distorted the shapes of ancient, wind-scoured rocks. The air tasted of brine and something older, something elemental. It hummed with a latent energy that prickled her skin, a resonance that felt both alien and eerily familiar. She had always felt it, a thrumming beneath the surface of her skin, a whisper of power she had learned to cage, to deny. Her mother’s stern pronouncements, her father’s anxious sighs – they had warned her of the dangers of being too much, of being… different. They had seen its echoes in Liam’s tempestuous spirit, and had sought to inoculate her against its seductive call. But here, stripped bare by the storm’s wrath, the cage felt fragile, the lock rusted through.
