Chapter 5
Liam's Tempest
Liam’s mind is a battlefield, his moods swinging from manic brilliance to crushing despair. In one moment, he devises a daring strategy that outwits an English fleet, his mind a razor’s edge. In the next, his despondency plunges him into a deep, paralyzing melancholy, endangering the crew with his inaction. Maeve watches him, her heart torn between frustration and fierce love. Finn, sensing Liam’s turmoil, stays close, a silent, furry anchor. His volatile nature is both their greatest asset and their most terrifying vulnerability, a constant gamble on the treacherous seas.
The deck of the *Sea Serpent’s Kiss* pitched and rolled, a familiar dance with the capricious ocean, but for Liam, the storm was not outside, but within. His mind, a wild, untamed thing, was a tempest of its own making, lashing from the dizzying heights of inspiration to the crushing depths of despair. He paced the quarterdeck, a caged lion, his eyes burning with a feverish light that Maeve knew too well. Beside him, Finn, his massive wolfhound frame a solid, comforting presence, watched with an ancient patience, his grey muzzle occasionally nudging Liam’s hand as if to tether him to the present.
“The English dogs,” Liam breathed, his voice a low growl, laced with the manic energy that seized him like a sudden squall. “They think they can fence us in, Maeve. They think their iron hulls and puffed-up admirals can contain the O’Malley spirit.” He gestured wildly towards the horizon, where the faint smudge of sails hinted at the approaching English fleet. “But they forget, sister, that the sea herself answers to a different queen.”
Maeve leaned against the mast, the rough wood a grounding force against the tremor in her own heart. Liam’s brilliance, when it struck, was blinding. He could see angles, anticipate maneuvers, and weave strategies with a speed that left her breathless. It was in these moments she felt the phantom echo of their father’s pragmatic mind, a mind so often dulled by the tedious ledgers of the tax office. But Liam’s brilliance was a double-edged sword, always threatening to cleave him in two.
