A wave of nausea, sharp and unexpected, washed over her, forcing her to grip the edge of the table. It had been happening more frequently lately, a subtle unease that she’d dismissed as stress, the lingering anxiety from the fallout. But this was different. This was a visceral, undeniable shift within her body. She stumbled to the small bathroom, her reflection staring back – pale, drawn, with shadows under her eyes that spoke of sleepless nights and a gnawing despair. As she splashed cold water on her face, a terrifying realization began to dawn, a seed of impossible hope and overwhelming dread.

The doctor's office was sterile, the air thick with the scent of antiseptic and hushed anxieties. Becky sat on the crinkly paper of the examination table, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The doctor, a kind woman with gentle eyes, spoke softly, her words a blur of medical terms that coalesced into a single, life-altering truth. Pregnant.
