Chapter 8

Betrayal's Sting

A devastating setback occurs, a crucial design submission is mysteriously rejected or a critical opportunity is lost under suspicious circumstances, heavily implying sabotage. Becky is devastated, her trust shattered. She suspects foul play, possibly from Ginny or even within the Adedeji circle, and feels betrayed by Samuel’s perceived inability to protect her or even fully believe her suspicions. The incident creates a deep rift between them, marked by accusations, hurt, and a profound sense of distrust. Becky is left questioning not only Samuel’s commitment but also her own judgment and place in his world.

The air in Becky’s small studio crackled with an energy that was both electric and suffocating. Her fingers, usually nimble and sure, trembled as she carefully laid out the final sketches for the ADJ Emerging Designers competition. This was it. She’d poured everything into it, not just for the prize money, the potential mentorship, or the chance to showcase her work on a grand stage, but for Samuel. For the hope that he, and by extension his family, would finally see her not as a fleeting distraction, but as a woman of substance, a designer of worth.

A soft knock at the door made her jump. “Come in!” she called, her voice a little breathless.
