Chapter 4
The Weight of Legacy
Samuel finds himself increasingly burdened by the immense legacy of the ADJ fashion house. His father’s unwavering vision for the brand, steeped in tradition and exclusivity, clashes with Samuel’s own evolving perspective, which is increasingly influenced by Becky's fresh approach. He’s torn between the loyalty he owes his family and the genuine love he feels for Becky, a love that challenges the rigid foundations of his upbringing. The pressure to conform, to be the heir his father expects, weighs heavily on him, creating internal conflict that begins to strain his relationship with Becky. He grapples with the fear of disappointing his father versus the fear of losing Becky.
The gilded halls of ADJ felt less like a sanctuary and more like a gilded cage to Samuel. Every polished surface, every impeccably tailored suit hanging in the vast showroom, seemed to whisper of expectation, of a legacy he was meant to inherit, a legacy that felt increasingly suffocating. His father, Mr. Solomon Adedeji, a man carved from granite and ambition, moved through these spaces with an unshakeable authority, his every pronouncement a decree. Samuel, on the other hand, felt like a sapling struggling to find sunlight beneath the shadow of an ancient, imposing oak.
“Samuel, the Milan show is approaching. We need to finalize the collection’s theme,” Mr. Adedeji’s voice boomed, echoing in the cavernous office. He gestured towards a mood board adorned with images of regal, old-world silhouettes. “Classic ADJ. Timeless elegance. That is our brand.”
Samuel traced the sharp lines of a sketch, his mind miles away, conjuring images of Becky’s vibrant, unconventional designs. Her fabrics pulsed with life, her cuts dared to be different, a stark contrast to the staid perfection his father championed. “Father,” he began, his voice softer than he intended, “I’ve been thinking… perhaps we could incorporate some bolder elements? Something that speaks to a new generation?”
